H.E. Dr. Surin PITSUWAN

This year, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation newly launched "Promoting Japan-Asia Relations: An Opinion Leaders' Exchange" to further deepen the mutual understanding and contribute to strengthening collaborative relationships between Japan and its Asian neighbors by inviting opinion leaders in Asian region who play definitive roles in policymaking and forming public opinions. To mark the launch of the project, we invited H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, the former Director General of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) as our first guest to have his lecture on the theme of "Political Situations in Thailand and its Future Prospect".

Apart from Asia's two big powers, China and India, Thailand is the host country of the biggest number of Japanese companies with whom Japan enjoys the closest relationship. Currently, the nation is under the interim administration of the military-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). While NCPO has drafted a "roadmap" targeting the restoration of democracy before the end of 2015, the political prospect of Thailand still remains uncertain. Under such circumstances, we had this precious opportunity to hear from H.E.Dr. Surin, who is an experienced politician and also a former foreign minister of Thailand, about the present issues surrounding the nation and its future possibilities.
