Sasakawa Peace Foundation Lecture by Experts from Turkey’s Political, Economic and Social Research Foundation (SETA)
Topic: "Secularism in Turkey: Prime Minister Erdoğan's Political Prospects" (February 17, 2011)
Closed.
The Sasakawa Middle East Islam Fund of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation will hold a lecture by Professor Talip Kucukcan and Mr. Taha Ozhan, both from Turkey’s Political, Economic and Social Research Foundation (SETA), on February 17, 2011 (Thursday). One of Turkey’s leading think tanks, SETA publishes Insight Turkey, a quarterly journal that carries high-caliber papers and analysis on Turkey’s internal affairs, foreign relations, and more.

The AKP (Justice and Development Party), an Islamist party that has run a single-party government in Turkey since 2002, has defied Western concerns and predictions about the spread of fundamentalism in Turkey, while Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has guided the nation with a stable hand.

Turkey’s assertiveness and importance in the Middle Eastern Islamic region has increased—with a worsening of the country’s relations with Israel due to incidents such as the Turkish aid convoy attack on Gaza last year, with Turkish opposition to UN Security Council sanctions on Iran, and so on. This rising influence is also being driven by Prime Minister Erdoğan’s political leadership.

Both speakers are visiting Japan for the first time. Prof Kucukcan is a founder of SETA, and currently its Foreign Policy Research Coordinator. Mr. Ozhan is a director of SETA. Both have written many articles for Insight Turkey. They are also well known political commentators on Turkish television. This event will provide a valuable opportunity to hear directly from two leading researchers on Turkish politics and Islamic relations.

We hope you can join us.
