Lecture Information
In order to keep abreast of the rapidly changing political situation in the Islamic Middle East, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation currently conducts a lecture series on political movements in the region.

For this lecture, the sixth in the series, the Foundation has invited Dr. Stephen Walt, an expert in international relations from Harvard University, to speak on "US Middle Eastern Policy in the Post-Arab Spring Era and the Israel Lobby" on June 12th (Tue) in Tokyo.

Dr. Walt is an expert on wide range of topics, including US foreign policy, security, and Middle Eastern politics. In his book "Taming American Power - The Global Response to US Primacy-" he provides a thorough analysis of US foreign policy, with a particular focus on recent US Middle Eastern policy. Together with Dr. John Mearsheimer and his colleagues, Dr. Walt has criticized the 2003 US attack in Iraq as not being in America's national interest. Furthermore, he has pointed out what he considers to be the excessive influence wielded over US Middle Eastern policy by the Israel Lobby from a realist standpoint .

In the course of the lecture, Dr. Walt discussed the impact that the post-Arab spring upheaval in the Middle East has had on US Middle Eastern policy, as well as the various activities of the Israel Lobby.
