Delegation of Indian Parliamentarians arrives in Japan
From October 14-18, 2014, a multi-party delegation of Indian parliamentarians visited Japan. (Cities visited: Tokyo, Shizukoka) At over one billion people, the population of India comprises 17% of the population of the globe. Moreover, after China and the US, the country is one of the world's foremost users of energy, and produces the 4th largest amount of electricity of all countries worldwide. Furthermore, its energy use is forecast to rise in line with its rapid economic growth. Yet, the country produces just 7% of its own energy needs at present and produces less, as a percentage, each year. In light of concerns about the coming energy shortages in the country, the program held in Japan was on the topic of "Energy (sustainable energy and clean energy)."
The delegation visited the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy, Ukishima Solar Power Plant (Tokyo Electric Power) and Isogo Thermal Power Plant (J-Power), where they learnt about Japan's energy policy, sustainable and clean energies, and toured the facilities. The also paid a courtesy call on vice foreign affairs minister Mr. Kiuchi and met with the Japan-India Parliamentary Friendship League, toured the factories of the Suzuki company in Hamamatsu and paid a courtesy call on the chairman and CEO, Mr. Suzuki. The group also attended a memorial lecture for the delegation of Indian parliamentarians on the theme of 'New possibilities in Japan-India relations - from the viewpoint of energy issues', where the delegation leader Mr. Vijay gave a talk on energy problems and possibilities in strengthening Japan-India relations.
