The Sasakawa Pan Asia Fund was originally established as the Sasakawa Southeast Asia Cooperation Fund in April 1992 to support initiatives targeting four countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. To meet increasing requests for assistance, it was renamed the Sasakawa Pan Asia Fund (SPAF) and began to expand its parameters to include other states in Asia in fiscal 2002. At present the Fund is supporting training and forums for the development of journalists, research on international economic systems and structural reform to prevent a recurrence of the recent Asian economic crisis, development of the next generation of leaders, and other activities in line with these broad program areas.
