From 8th September to 12th September, 2014, 33 science journalists from Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Australia joined SjCOOP Asia Meeting for training sessions. The participating journalists were divided into groups based on their languages, which were Indonesian, Vietnamese and English. Senior Asian science journalists mentored these groups.

In Tokyo, science journalists from Japanese major media and experts in energy and science gave lectures to the trainees. Given guidance by senior mentors and staff of WFSJ and Japanese Association of Science and Technology Journalists (JASTJ), the trainees learnt about scientific issues shared in Asian region such as natural disasters, nuclear power and public health as well as how to report on those issues.

On 10 and 11 September, the training sessions took place in Fukushima prefecture (Fukushima City, Minami-Soma City, and Miharu Town). The participants visited facilities such as Minami-soma hospital and Fukushima Environmental Safety Center of Japan Atomic Energy Agency to learn about effects of Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and interviewed people in the regions such as medical professionals, researchers, local government officials and local residents for reports.
