Lecture Information
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation has invited Dr. Alexander Shumilin, Director of the Center for the Great Middle East Conflicts at the Institute for the USA & Canada Studies (ISKRAN), Russian Academy of Sciences to speak at the seminar detailed below, on September 12th, 2014.

Russia is at present home to a large number of the Muslim population. Moreover, the country has a long history of direct and deep connections with the Islamic world and has conducted a vast amount of research on Islam, though this fact is little known in Japan. Contemporary research in Russia on the Middle East places a strong focus on fieldwork in the region, and much research has been devoted to the policy analysis which may contribute to the policy making process.

Based upon his long-standing experience of fieldwork and research on the region, Dr. Shumilin has spoken widely on the current situation in the Middle East both inside and outside Russia. He has also been playing an important role in framing the Middle East policy of the international community, for example, through attending an UN roundtable meeting held in July 2014 concerning Iraq.
