Project Outline
This project is conducted in the Micronesian region to support the development of models for marine protected areas that consider local community needs and the region's historical context, in order to protect marine biodiversity and promote the sustainable use of marine resources. Marine protection areas in the Micronesian region at present have an emphasis on a Western style of biodiversity protection. Considering the high level of dependence of local community livelihoods and culture on the marine resources here, this project is considering the establishment of an Asia-Pacific style of marine protection area for the sustainable use of resources.
Implementation Plan
The following activities will be implemented during the final year of the two-year project: Meetings of the Marine Environment Committee (5 times) First committee meeting (about May 2011): Confirmation of annual plan, selection of survey areas, etc. Second committee meeting (about July 2011): Invite about eight practitioners from island nations, conduct interviews. Third committee meeting (about September 2011): Prepare for local surveys on each theme, make arrangements for final report. Fourth committee meeting (about January 2012): Comprehensive discussion, preparation of final report. Final report presentation (end of March 2012): Announce results to organizations concerned with marine environment. Local surveys (2 times by committee members, 4 times by program officers) Local surveys will be carried out by committee members on specific themes (about August and November 2011; Micronesia), to conduct research for final report. SPF program officers will conduct about four surveys to collect basic information and coordinate program activities. Preparation of final report Four meetings of the committee before the end of March 2012 will result in a final report that includes the comprehensive research findings relating to the development of models for marine protection areas. At the final report presentation, the details of this report will shared with organizations concerned with the marine environment.
