A symposium on prospective Japan-India partnership was held in New Delhi on 21st January, 2016, as part of the project “Deepening India-Japan Partnership”. Results of the policy research project, which began in 2014 aiming at strengthening Japan-India partnership, including concrete policy recommendations were presented at a round table meeting. The meeting was attended by approximately 40 people from both India and Japan including scholars and analysts, who have participated in the research project, as well as specialists and practitioners of the four key areas of bilateral cooperation; economics, energy and climate change, security, and global governance. They further discussed implementation of the concrete policies that both countries can undertake to impart vitality and longevity to their partnership.
After the roundtable meeting, a panel discussion open to the general public was held as an event commemorating the publishing of a volume “Poised for Partnership: Deepening India-Japan Relations in the Asian Century”. It is published by the Oxford University Press as one of the project’s products. The panel consists of scholars and diplomatic experts of the both countries actively discussed outcomes of the projects, idea and views rose at the roundtable meeting, as well as their own experiences. They also engaged lively with the audience during Q & A sessions.
At the public event, Dr. S. Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs of India and Mr. Kenji Hiramatsu, Japanese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to India delivered keynote speeches, and they both talked about importance and expectations of strengthening Japan-India partnership seen from the respective countries as well as initiatives so far and future directions.
