Strengthening the Intellectual Foundations for Contemporary Japanese Studies in India - Phase Ⅱ

Project Outline
Although the importance of Japan-India relations is becoming ever more widely recognized, there are few opportunities for people in India to research issues affecting the two countries and deepen understanding of contemporary Japan. In light of this situation, the Foundation conducted a three-year project from FY2007 to support the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) in its research into contemporary Japan.
This project (Phase II) will take on board and expand on the results obtained to date and strengthen the research platform in Japan. By so doing, the project will aim to promote understanding of contemporary Japan in India and contribute to advancing mutual understanding between the two countries. In this year, the final year of Phase II of the project, an international conference to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and India will be held in New Delhi for high ranking members of the Indian government. Moreover, further economic seminars, which have been characteristic of the Phase II activities, will be held in Chennai (Tamil Nadu Province), which is home to a large number of Japanese companies. Furthermore, continuing from last year, support will be provided for researchers working on Japan-India studies and information on the results of activities will be disseminated to the public.
