People-to-people exchange between Japan and Turkey tied with ocean

Project Outline
This project focuses on Turkey, a country identified as a target for priority support under the Sasakawa Middle East Islam Fund. It supports The Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (Japan's only comprehensive marine research and educational institution) to work with five Turkish universities to conduct exchanges of persons selected in the fields of marine resources and maritime issues. In the future, with the impetus of this project, efforts will be made to create a marine research network between Japan and other Middle Eastern countries in addition to Turkey.
Implementation Plan
The following activities will be implemented during this year.
  • Travel to Japan by educators and students (November 2-11, 2011, for ten days)
    One educator and three students from each of the five Turkish universities (for a total of 20 persons) will visit Japan for the following activities.
    • (1) Selection of participating students
      A selection committee will be created at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology and each of the five Turkish universities in order to select the students to participate in this project. The students will submit the details of what they intend to report at a poster session of a symposium, and will be selected based on their English presentation tests.
    • (2) Marine training (November 7 and 8)
      The "Shinyo Maru" training vessel of the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology will be used to practice maneuvering, and marine observation in Sagami Bay, and analyze data from the marine observations.
    • (3) Public symposium (November 9 and 10)
      A public symposium entitled "Effective utilization of Ocean resources and future maritime industries" will be held at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, where educators and university students from both countries will report on their research. Students will prepare research posters, display them, and explain the contents.
    • (4) Japanese home stay for Turkish students
      With the cooperation of the Minato International Association, 15 Turkish students will stay with local families.
    • (5) In addition, participants will tour various sites, including the National Maritime Research Institute, Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co., and more.
  • Travel to Turkey by Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology educators (January 2012, for 11 days)
    Two educators from the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology will visit the five Turkish universities in order to review the current year's activities, and to hammer out activity plans for the next year of the program. They will also visit three regional universities (Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Muğla University, and Ege University) to offer lectures on the topic of "Japanese Fisheries and Aquaculture," in order to promote understanding of Japan's fisheries.
