Water Pollution Survey (Tokyo Metropolitan Government, 2012)

Feb 17, 2015
On September 2, 2012, a Tokyo Metropolitan Government research group used a boat to take air samples from 1 point and water samples for water pollution surveys from 13 points near the coasts of Uotsuri Island, Kitakojima Island, and Minamikojima Island. It tested the air for volatile organic compounds, finding either no traces of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, dichloromethane, or benzene, or levels that were considerably lower than the 2011 average for a typical area in metropolitan Tokyo.
The group's results for water quality were almost the same as the results of 2010 measurements by Okinawa Prefecture's Department of Environmental and Community Affairs. The water quality around the three islands was not greatly different from that of seawater elsewhere in Okinawa Prefecture, with no nitrogen, phosphorus, or other pollution found around any of their coastlines. However, the group found that on one part of Uotsuri Island's coastline a lot of rubbish, driftwood, and other items had drifted ashore and reported the need to quickly deal with this problem.
