Change in English Translation Policy

Macron

This website previously used macrons over long vowels in names of people, reference materials, etc. We have now changed our English translation policy as follows:

Ā, ā, Ī, ī, Ū, ū, Ē, ē, Ō, ō → A, a, I, i, U, u, E, e, O, o,

Name of Japanese Islands

The principles for standardization of names of Japanese islands in English were decided upon by the Interagency Coordination Group on Communications Concerning Territorial Integrity at its meeting on March 11, 2014. We are changing our policy regarding the names of islands in conformity with these principles. Please refer to the website of the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI): http://www.gsi.go.jp/ENGLISH/kihonjyoho-e31000.html.

Some exceptions are made for the islands with alternative names that have gained wide currency in the English-language world. Please refer to the list of Japanese Islands' names on this website.
