The hydrogen ion concentration scale (pH) is a chemical index used to specify acidity and base properties of a water-based solution. It is difficult to accurately determine the pH of seawater. The authors have developed a pH sensor based on a new concept, and placed third in an international pH sensor competition held since 2013. The new pH sensor is now contributing to ocean acidification research from the north to the south poles.
