Overview | While Greenland is the largest island in the world, it is often listed in a corner of maps made from Japan's perspective, and we do not fully understand its reality. More than 80% of the islands are covered by ice sheets reaching more than 3,000m in depth and annual snowfalls, but the ice sheets are currently melting at a faster rate than expected, and there are concerns about the significant environmental and economic impact on the region. On the other hand, global warming has led to rapid development of natural resources, and mining is underway not only for quartz, metals, and zinc, but also for rare metals, rare earths, and other rare and valuable minerals. With this backdrop, the Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF) has invited Jacob Isbosethsen, Head of Representation in Beijing, Government of Greenland, to this seminar to discuss the status of the ongoing resource development boom in Greenland, their efforts to protect nature, and how to "balance environmental conservation and economic growth" in Greenland. |
