Proposing New Roles for Men in Asia

FY2019

Implementing Agency Sasakawa Peace Foundation
Year Second year of a three-year project
Project Type Self Operated
Budget 15,000,000 yen

Project Outline

This project aims to study the role men play in promoting greater gender equality in Japan and other Asian countries. As part of this project, a survey was conducted in Japan, Seoul, Taipei, Shanghai, and Hong Kong focusing on the concept of so-called “caring masculinity.” The preliminary evidence suggests that masculinity itself is a flexible concept, and that men may on a semi-conscious level be modifying their own interpretations of masculinity to adapt to new situations. The results from these surveys will be used to formulate policy proposals to address issues facing men in the region.
