Dr. Amitav Acharya will examine the broader implications of September 11 and the U.S. strike on the Taliban for the security of Asia, especially East Asia. Governments in the region face a challenge in dealing with the consequences of September 11 and with their anti-terrorist policies for state-society relations. The war against terrorism is defining the concept of security and rekindling a debate about the merits of democracy vis-a-vis authoritarianism. At stake are the stability of multi-ethnic societies and the future of democratic governance in the region.
