Lecture Information
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation invited Mr. William Martin, former US Deputy Secretary of Energy on the theme of “Global Energy Trend and Developments” in Tokyo on September 4th, 2012. Under Reagan administration, Mr. Martin also served as Special Assistant to the President and as Executive Secretary of the National Security Council. Recently he concluded ten years of Chairing the Nuclear Energy Advisory Committee of the Department of Energy.
Since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the issue of energy security has caught public attention in Japan, especially through the issue of electrical power supply. Yet, the issue of energy security is not only a problem for Japan, but also a global agenda that we have to deal with. At the lecture, Mr. Martin looked ahead to a world of 10 billion people by 2100 and asked the basic question, how can the needs of human kind be met? How can the world provide clean, secure and affordable energy to ensure global prosperity? He described the need for a diversified energy mix to achieve clean and secure energy requirements, and looked at the responsibilities of advanced nations such as Japan and the United States to ensure global energy stability through advanced technologies that will be cleaner and more renewable than today's mix. Considering that without fundamental energy needs being met, it will be much more difficult to achieve economic growth and to secure jobs for young generation resulting in increased global tension and possible war over scarce resources, Mr. Martin addressed the unique responsibilities of the United States and Japan to work together to achieve global prosperity and peace.
