The purpose of this project was to promote basic
understanding of the workings of the market economy
among the Laotian people by providing the television
program The Structure of Market Economy, with a
soundtrack and accompanying text in Lao. More than
10,000 copies of the text were printed and distributed
to students, business people, civil servants, and others.
Demand for the text was extremely high among viewers,
indicating the depth of interest in learning about the
market economy. The TV program was broadcast in
March and April 2001.
Another major aim of the project was to stimulate
interest among people involved with the media and
education in producing educational software and in
education concerning the market economy. The TV
network personnel, university faculty, and elementary
and secondary school teachers who helped translate the
soundtrack, produce the text, and broadcast the
program were full of praise for the program's high
quality and the novel approach of combining the TV
program with a text. The project appears to have
succeeded in stirring interest in the educational use of
TV and other media.
