The Shan people, an ethnic minority living in the southern, river basin region of Myanmar's Shan State, are among the poorest in the country. The aims of this project are to help restore the area's natural environment through the transfer of environment-friendly technology from Japan; and to promote agricultural development in the region through technical assistance and technology transfer in the agricultural field.

This year, three Japanese agricultural scientists were dispatched to Myanmar to conduct training courses for Shan farmers on specially devised farming techniques and systems. Furthermore, two trainees from Myanmar came to Japan to study shiitake and potato farming, forestry and other agricultural subjects while also learning Japanese language essential for their agricultural training.
