PUBLICATIONS
Special Publications

Since being founded in 1986, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation has conducted a large variety of projects all over the world in collaboration with NPO's and researchers. As a result of these activities, we have accumulated a large number of reports, lecture proceedings and papers. However, since the content of many of these publications were highly specialized, there was not a big market for it, and therefore it was not possible to distribute the information to the public through commercial publishing channels. As a result, the fruits of our accomplishments were shared only among those involved in the projects, despite our desire to reach a larger audience. Therefore, we were drawn to the interactive nature of the Internet and BookPark's unique information distribution system. With BookPark only the necessary number of publications could be bound and printed (starting with just one), information could be sent as electronic data or in print, and publications could be made up of a combination of words, images, and sound.

The main objective for using BookPark is to take the information that SPF has and release it on the Web in order to reach a wider audience. However, we also hope that by doing so, people will evaluate our activities that cannot be adequately measured by the market mechanism. Since the year 2000, SPF has been conducting the 'Information Distribution from Asia Program.' This program is aimed at distributing and sharing information, not only on projects that the SPF has been involved in, but a wide variety of intellectual information from Asia to the world, through the medium of publications, electronic information, conferences and seminars. We have decided to utilize BookPark as part of this aim, and are the first NPO to make such an attempt. We hope to use this site not only for selling publications, but to create a page for sharing information, in order to further promote public understanding of activities of the non-profit sector.
