Online/Post-Graduate Courses Development for Law School

6,300,000 yen [Grant Project]
The University of the South Pacific(USP/Fijij

Political uncertainty arising from land issues and the wave of global economics in Pacific islands make it urgent to foster legal experts in Pacific islands to amend current and customary laws. USP has been developing distance learning courses at the undergraduate level since 1998, and after SPF helped USP develop online courses from 2001 to 2003, the number of participants in the distance learning courses has increased dozens of times. Building on this experience, the project plans to develop two distance learning courses at the postgraduate level (master's degree) and to cooperate with Asian higher education institutions to share education materials and experience with them.

Activities of this year will be as follows.
  1. Development of Master Course level on-line law courses (2007)
A course developer, a secretarial assistant, and an IT specialist will jointly develop online courses on commercial code and environmental law. Following three components comprises the latter: contamination, biodiversity treaty, and introduction to environmental law, with completion targeted within this year. In order to develop the course on environmental law, the project aims to cooperate with International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), a Swiss-based international nature conservation organization. The resultant online course will be registered as an official subject of the USP.

  2. Development of the Pacific Islands Treaty Series database (2007)
As in the previous year, materials will be collected for a legal database encompassing various pacts involving the Pacific Region. The database will be used as auxiliary study materials in the online education course.

  3. Development of the Co-Sharing Classes with Asia (2007)
Faculty of the United Nations University will be invited to the UPS to drive a development of joint course on environmental law. A possibility of joint-authorship with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (China) for the environmental course will be studied.
