Sino-Japanese Relations: 30years(1978`2008)

10,000,000yen [Grant Project]
Social Sciences Academic Press (China)

Since 1978, China and Japan developed close and broad-based exchanges for almost thirty years. It is fair to say that the exchange has exerted positive influence on the acceleration of the reform and opening-up policy as well as economic development in China. More recently, however, undue limelight is shed to discordance between the two countries, kindling sense of mistrust. The scarcity of positive appreciation of the track record of bilateral interactions on the part of China is one of the responsible factor for this state of affairs. Toward 2008 which mark 30th anniversary of China's reform and open-door policy as well as conclusion of the Japan-China Peace and Amity Treaty, this project attempts to statistically sort out the achievements so far and conduct an appraisal from the perspective of the Chinese people. The results will be compiled as a book and will be disseminated in both countries in an effort to close the gap in-between the two peoples and contribute to the establishment of "strategically reciprocating relations" in a pursuit of common interest, a future challenge that awaits two countries.
This year, a study group will be organized to cover comprehensively the three-decade history of interchanges between Japan and China by bringing together Chinese researchers and exponents who are knowledgeable about Japan-China interchanges, with Social Sciences Academic Press serving as secretariat. The deliverables will be compiled as a book provisionally entitled Sino-Japanese Relations: 30 years and subsequently published in Chinese and in Japanese in the following year. During this year necessary preparations will be made.
  1. A Study Group on Three-decade Sino-Japanese Relations
Bringing together researchers and exponents in China, six workshops will be held this year to study Sino-Japanese relations since 1978.

  2. Writing
As the outcome of the above study, Sino-Japanese Relations: 30years (provisional title) will be compiled. 20 authors consisting of exponents representing the Institute of Economy, the Institute of Japanese Studies, the Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Science(CASS), Peking University and Nankai University will write articles covering different fields. Draft shall be completed within this year.
