Program for Promoting Japan-China Exchange in the Field of Security/PhaseII

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, China Institute for International Strategic Studies (China)
The Sasakawa Japan-China Friendship Fund has been implementing mutual visit and training programs for field officers in service in two countries with a view to building a stable Sino-Japan relationship toward the future and to facilitating confidence building in the area of security. Positioning a five-year period starting from 2006 as Phase II, the project continues the mutual visits and training programs. Each occasion will involve on-site observations of troops, lectures on national defense policies, and direct dialogues for candid exchanges of opinion, Furthermore, the project seeks to promote mutual understanding through leaning each other's history, society and culture. As 2007marks the 35th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, a group of experts shall also be invited along with a group of PLA field officers group's visit to Japan in order to celebrate the anniversary in Tokyo.
- Preparation of Mutual Visits and Trainings
Program content will be examined and coordinated and study materials will be made ready.
- Visit to China (Commissioned to China Institute for International Strategic Studies)
(1) Participants: 10 officers from the JDSF etc and a few experts
(2) Schedule: 10 days in early June, 2007
(3) Destination: Army, Navy and Air Force troops in Beijing and Northeast region, education facilities for the military, farming villages, schools, historic sites, etc.
- Visit to Japan
(1) Participants: 20 field officers of the PLA
(2) Schedule: 2 weeks in late August, 2007
(3) Destination: Ministry of Defense, the National Institute for Defense Studies, the National Defense Academy, JGSDF-, JMSDF- and JASDF-related facilities respectively, private enterprises, farming villages, historic and cultural sites, etc.
- Experts' Visit to Japan
(1) Participants: 8 representatives of the China Institute for International Strategic Studies
(2) Schedule: 1 week in late August, 2007
(3) Destination: Ministry of Defense, the National Institute for Defense Studies, the National Defense Academy, JGSDF-, JMSDF- and JASDF-related facilities respectively
(4) Participation in a commemorative event that marks the 35th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China
