Sasakawa Scholarship System for Chinese Students Studying Japanese/phase III

The Sasakawa Japan-China Friendship Fund has been conducting the "Sasakawa Scholarship System for Chinese Students Studying Japanese" project since 1995. The first phase was from 1995 to 1999 and the second phase was from 2000 to 2004. The present project is the third year of the third phase of the original project. From 1995 to 2005, about 100 students received grants every year, and the number of scholarship students totaled about 1110 with grants totaling about 2,300,000 yuan. Early scholars already have made significant contributions to the mutual understanding between Japan and China, and economical exchange between both countries.
The following activities are planned this year in an effort to promote Japanese language education and facilitate Chinese youth to deepen their understanding about Japan.
  1. Scholarship Program (1) Screening committees will be set up in each university to prepare and administer the provision of scholarship. Documents describing how to select scholarship recipients and procedures for implementation shall be sent out, and prescribed steps such as scholarship conferment ceremonies will be held accordingly. Separately, the program seek to expand exchanges with teachers and students in a tie-up with various events Chinese universities organize such as cultural festival, Japanese cinema exhibition, Japan culture week, Japanese theatrical performance competition and Japanese composition contest.
    (2) Amount of scholarship: 2,000 yuan (approximately 30,000yen) per student per annum.
    (3) 105 students majoring in Japanese in following universities will be eligible for the scholarship: Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Sichuan International Studies University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangxi University, Nanjing University, Heilongjiang University, Shandong University, Northwest University, Xiamen University, Hunan University, Guizhou University.
    (4) Tracking: For the purpose of building a network of scholarship recipients and others, the project will touch base with the recipients.

  2. Compilation of Papers Papers submitted in the screening process will be compiled as a booklet for distribution to concerned parties including individuals and organizations.
