Research into a China-Japan-Korea Trialogue in Northeast Asia Security

@Northeast Asia, centered around Japan, China and South Korea, is still laden with instability in the context of security, and a framework for multilateral security dialogue that transcends the scope of bilateral talks is yet to exist. Against this background, the project aims to form a private-sector joint study group consisting of 10 members to deal with security issues in Japan, China and South Korea. Through attitude survey vis-a`-vis a total of 90 experts inclusive of policy-planners, scholars and researchers in each country in addition to the research and study on the current state of affairs, the project seeks to come up with policy recommendation toward the resolution of security issues in the region.

The following activities are planned the final year of the project.
  1. Attitude Survey by Experts and Core Group Meeting
    (1) Execution of Attitude Survey (April-June 2007)
    Two questionnaires will be conducted simultaneously in three countries with regard to following three fields. Separately, interview-based surveys will be conducted in Japan and China.
    a) Politics and military
    b) Economy (possibility of tripartite FTA amongst Japan, China and South Korea; personal mobility and security)
    c) History and society (such as the perception of history in each country)
    (2) The 1st Core Group Meeting (July 2007, Beijing)
    A meeting will be organized to analyze the outcome of aforementioned surveys. Taking this opportunity, the gist of final report on the survey and invitee list for a symposium will be reviewed.
    (3) The 2nd Core Group Meeting (October 2007, Seoul)
    An interim report on the final survey report will be presented and agenda for the symposium will be set.

  2. Symposium (November 2007, 2-day, Seoul)
    The result of analysis of attitude survey of experts will be presented in the symposium. Participants are scheduled to include Core Group made of three countries, groups of experts in the host country, government officials, researchers and others, totaling roughly 100.

  3. Printing and Binding of Final Survey Report (February 2008)
    In view of discussions in the symposium, a final report will be prepared for subsequent distribution to governments of concerned countries, regional organizations and research institutions.
