Toward an Asian Economic Community: An Agenda for Action

Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS/India)
The project aims to promote regional cooperation in Asia in collaboration with political circles, economic groups, and media using the results of Phase I of the gToward an Asian Economic Communityh project.
Continuing its effort in the first year, the project aims to submit specific policy recommendation and align its research activities to this end. Simultaneously, it aims to contribute to track-II study toward the establishment of CEPEA, a comprehensive economic partnership of ASEAN+6 (Japan, China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand) proposed by Japan, and ERIA, an East Asian counterpart of the OECD. The project also attempts to play a part to networking activities.
- Studies toward Embodiment of Proposals (2007)
Working groups by subject will be set up to study political constraints for the establishment of an Asian Economic Community and the current status of intra-region division of role in various areas including investment, trade, transportation, energy and finance. Further studies will be conducted as to how to put into place a specific structure for cooperation to build necessary systems.
- International Conference (December 2007, Singapore)
Building on the results of the studies above, a high-level international conference will be organized jointly with ASEAN Secretariat, the Asian Development Bank, etc. Participants will include approximately 60 individuals including officials of ASEAN+6.
- Dissemination of Information and Publication (2007)
The outcome of studies and conference described above will be distributed through a website, newsletter, discussion paper, books, etc. The project will also step up its effort to have the aforesaid outcomes covered by well-known newspapers such as Financial Express, Economic Times and Jakarta Post.
