Capacity Enhancement of Young Diplomats in Myanmar

The project aims to enhance the management capacity of young Myanmar diplomats to enhance relationships with ASEAN countries by sending them to major ASEAN summit and ministerial summit meetings, giving on-site training at ASEAN organizing offices, and subsequently holding domestic workshops to share experience.
Following activities are planned for the second year of the project.
- Screening of Diplomats and Liaising with Host Organizations (July-November 2007)
Myanmar Foreign Ministry and host organizations will screen and select diplomats who will be dispatched to preparatory works for various ASEAN meetings scheduled in the course of this year. Additionally, the project liaises with and makes specific requests for cooperation to a secretariat of respective meeting as well as the ASEAN Secretariat.
- Sending Diplomats to ASEAN Senior Officials Meetings and Ministerial Meetings(July-December 2007)
For the purpose of on-site training, about 20 young diplomats in total will be sent to the following functions: 5 diplomats to the 40th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (July 2007 in the Philippine); 10 diplomats to the 12th ASEAN Summit (November 2007 in Singapore); 5 diplomats to an on-site workshop for running a high-level meeting to be held in September 2007 in Jakarta under the cooperation from the ASEAN Secretariat.
- Workshop for Organizing/Running a Summit-Level Meeting (January 2008, Yangon)
A two-day workshop will be held to accommodate roughly 40 diplomats and other relevant officials who will not have gone through aforementioned offshore trainings. Under the cooperation of the ASEAN Secretariat, five officers who have past experiences in organizing and running a summit meeting will be invited as instructors while Myanmar diplomats who have taken part in a similar workshop in the past will serve as facilitators. Materials for this seminar will be compiled as a booklet and distributed so that the fruits of this activity shall be shared on a broader basis.
