Capacity Building on Security in Myanmar

The project aims to show Myanmar routes to returning to international society by helping Myanmar military officers understand the importance of multilateral and regional security systems, which would help Myanmar remove leading factors in its isolation. The project will provide Myanmar government officers, including past and current military officers, with security training.
Although the kick-off of the project was planned for last year, it was unable to do so due to the lack of permission for implementation from the State Peace and Development Council.
The following activities are planned this year assuming that permission can be obtained.
- Yangon Training Workshop
(1) Screening of the participants: Under the cooperation of Ministries of Foreign Affairs as well as Defense of Myanmar, approximately 50 participants will be selected mainly from middle-level cadre such as colonels and former military personnel.
(2) Implementation of Yangon Training Workshops (July 2007): A week-long workshop will be held by experts of grant recipient organization under the following topics:
a) Security in Southeast Asia, b) ASEAN and its international relations, c) Globalization | Establishing interdependent relationships, d) Comprehensive security in Southeast Asia and e) Theory of Security.
(3) Working papers to be developed by the participants (July 2007-February 2008): Under the guidance of the grant recipient, the participants will jointly draw working papers on security.
- Study Tour in Singapore (2 weeks, November 2007)
20 people will be chosen out of those who have participated in the aforesaid workshop for study tour in Nanyang Technological University. Lectures will be provided by exponents while opinion exchange with Singaporean security officials will be conducted.
