Human Resource Development Program for Economic Research in Myanmar

13,500,000 yen [Grant Project]
Myanmar Economic and Management Institute (MEMI/Japan)

Myanmar is a potentially strong country within ASEAN which boasts highly literate, culturally sophisticated population of fifty million people as well as rich agricultural and forestry resources. However, since 1988, Myanmar has been under severe information control, and research and education systems have been badly affected. Only a small number of researchers can write papers for peer reviewed journals and these researchers are growing old. Under the current conditions, the project aims to promote capacity building in young Myanmar researchers by providing them with research opportunities for the analysis of economic problems including industry development, policies and legal systems for trade and investment, and issues on foreign exchange. Activities of the first year will be as follows.
  1. Domestic Research Activities (April 2007-January 2008)
Nine trainees who were selected in the first year will be divided into three study groups to conduct researches, material gatherings and interviews with parties concerned, in the following fields:
    (1) Study on economic theories and policies (eg. Integration of currency rate and economic growth)
    (2) Trade and industry (eg. Industrialization policy)
    (3) Development of agriculture and farming villages (eg. Export-oriented farming and agriculture-based industry)

  2. Overseas Research Activities (June-July 2007)
Three researchers, one out of each three study groups, will be selected to be sent to Chulalongkorn University in Thailand for about 20 days. Under the guidance of Professors Buddhagarn and Kitti of Department of Economics, the researchers will engage in a joint research project for each theme with their counterparts and postgraduates in the university in an effort to deepen their understanding of the specialized fields.

  3. Interim Report Meeting and Final Presentation (September-October 2007 and March 2008, Yangon)
The interim report meeting will be held on a closed-door basis. Japanese and Myanmar mentors including Prof. Kiryu Minoru of Osaka Sangyo University and two others from Japan, and ex-President of Yangon Institute of Economics Prof. Myat Thein and three others from Myanmar will attend to have an update on the progress of nine traineesf studies. Final presentation session will be open to the public, where approximately thirty attendance including the mentors, local scholars, intellectuals, government officials and business persons will listen to, and give feedback to, the progress of the traineesf studies.
