People Exchange Program: Strengthening Partnerships in the Pan-Asia Region

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation
The Sasakawa Pan Asia Fund (SPAF) has been conducting people exchange programs since the foundation of the Sasakawa Southeast Asia Cooperation Fund, the predecessor of SPAF. The project is the third phase of the original people exchange program aiming to strengthen ties between Japan and new target countries, including regions west of India and Northeast Asian countries, in addition to maintaining the Southeast Asian human network already built by SPAF. The project also aims to develop a new human network for future projects.
The following exchange activities are planned this year under the main theme of gA Platform for Dialogue in Asian Region: The Future of East Asian Summit, APEC and ASEAN+3h.
- Exchange with ASEAN+3 (May 2007, 6 days, Japan)
Two leading figures from ASEAN will be invited to Japan to exchange opinions with the intellectuals representing Japanese political and business communities, thereby reinforcing human network through intellectual interchanges.
- Exchange with Young Leaders of ASEAN+3 (August 2007, 5 days, Jakarta)
Gaining corporation of Indonesia Institute, four young leaders of ASEAN+3 will be invited for opinion exchange with members of the Japanese Diet and intellectuals regarding how intra-region cooperation can be strengthened. The project seeks advices from Dr. Mya Than of Chulalongkorn University as to agenda setting and selection of delegates, and asks him to author a report that covers the results of exchange activities and current status of ASEAN.
- Inviting Intellectuals of New Target Countries to Japan (November 2007, 7 days, Japan)
In view of future project development by SPAF, four intellectuals reperesenting universities, research institutes and the press of West Asia will be invited to Japan to promote mutual understanding.
