International Comparative Analysis to Assess the Impact of Intellectual Property Development on the Conduct of Science

14,000,000 yen [Grant Project]
American Association for the Advancement of Science (USA)

Exclusive proprietary rights of intellectual property have been justified because they facilitate progress in innovation and promote public benefits. However, negative aspects in managing exclusive rights have also been pointed out. Discussions on the management of intellectual property rights have not deepened because there are no scientific data on the impacts of exclusive proprietary rights on society. The project aims to study the impacts of intellectual property rights on society via a survey of researchers and relevant personnel in the US, UK, Germany and Japan (national surveys), and to conduct an international comparative analysis. The results of the study will be widely disseminated to promote political discussions about the management of intellectual property rights. In the last year of the project, AAAS plans the following activities including an analysis of the previous study and the dissemination of the results.
  1. Analysis of previously conducted national surveys and compilation of reports
AAAS will analyze the data, conduct an international comparative analysis in cooperation with Washington State University, Queen Mary, University of London, and the Institute for Future Technology, and compile reports. The results will be disclosed on the AAAS website and at an annual meeting in February, 2007.

  2. Preparation for International Symposia (October to November, 2006)

  3. International Symposia (December, 2006 to March, 2007)
International Symposia will be held in Washington DC (December, 2006), London (January, 2007), and Tokyo (March, 2007) to disclose the study results and to discuss intellectual management systems.
