Online/Post-Graduate Courses Development for Law School
6,000,000 yen [Grant Project]
The University of the South Pacific (USP) (Fiji)
Political uncertainty arising from land issues and the wave of global economics in Pacific islands make it urgent to foster legal experts in Pacific islands to amend current and customary laws. USP has been developing distance learning courses at the undergraduate level since 1998, and after SPF helped USP develop online courses from 2001 to 2003, the number of participants in the distance learning courses has increased dozens of times. The project plans to develop two distance learning courses at the postgraduate level (masterfs degree) and to cooperate with Asian higher education institutions to share education materials and experience with them.
Activities of the first year will be as follows.
- Development of online courses at the postgraduate level (Masterfs course)
An Environmental and business laws online courses will be designed. Editorial work will be started in cooperation with USPfs Department of Marine Studies and the department of Business Laws at USPfs law school, and Macquarie University in Australia. At the same time, the necessary technology will be assessed and introduced into the online course in order to effectively manage the courses.
- Pacific Island legal database, PacLII
International treaties in the Pacific Islands area and related information will be added to the Pacific Island Legal Database, which already comprises about 400 databases. The resulting database will be used as one of the teaching materials for the postgraduate level online course.
- Development of collaborative classes with Asian countries including Japan
Professors from USP will visit institutions of higher education in Singapore,Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Japan, and discuss possibilities for the development of collaborative online courses.
(1) Japanese researchers will visit USP to prepare for a treaty between USP and Asian colleges in January, 2007.
