Contemporary Japanese Studies at Central European Universities
9,300,000yen [Self-Operated/Grant Project/Commissioned Project]
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Agroman Educational Foundation, St. Stephen University (Hungary), Charles University(Czech Republic)
The original project started as concentrated regular Studies courses in contemporary Japanese Studies at 4 major universities in middle Europe, and Japanese teachers were dispatched to teach at these universities. However, after 2004, structures of the Japanese Studies courses varied based on the background of each university. St. Stephen University in Hungary has a regular Japanese course with 3 local teachers, whereas Charles University in the Czech Republic has maintained its Japanese Studies course as preparatory to the establishment of a general East Asian Studies course.
This year is the last year of a 3-year project, and the implementing organizations will apply the results of the project to new projects while they continue to manage the Studies courses based on the background of each university. At the Warsaw School of Economics, the Japanese Studies course can be taught in its entirety by Polish teachers, and the dispatch of Japanese teachers will not be necessary. In the future, SPF will invite the Japanese Studies faculty from the Warsaw School of Economics for evaluation and planning of projects.
- Arrangement of the Japanese Studies Courses
The implementing organizations will select teachers, prepare the syllabus, and consider evaluation methods.
- Management of the regular courses (from May to September, 2006)
SPF commissions Charles University to manage the regular course at its Institute of International Studies.
- Dispatch of Japanese teachers (October, 2006 to March, 2007)
Japanese teachers will be dispatched to Slovakia and the Czech Republic to teach short courses in contemporary Japanese economics and management, and the history of the development of modern Japan.
- Contemporary Japanese Studies in Hungary (grant project)
Agroman Educational Foundation and St. Stephen University will manage the course in contemporary Japanese Studies.
(Final year of a 5-year project)
