Cultivating Specialists in International Security Issues/Phase II

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF), Asian Forum Japan (AFJ, Japan)
SPF has been conducting language training programs for Japanese specialists from the PeopleÕs Liberation Army (PLA) for the last 5 years, and supporting the attempts of trainees to enter into the graduate school of Peking University. This project is Phase II of the past project, and aims to foster security specialists with a deep understanding of Japanese politics and defense policies.
Activities of the 3rd year will be as follows.
- Training and exchange program for Japanese specialists from PLA (grant program implemented by AFJ)
Two Japanese specialists from PLA will visit Japan and attend Japanese language and international relationship study courses at Waseda University. They will also join research in Japanese politics and defense policies, visit local areas, and participate in exchange programs with officers from the Self Defense Forces.
- Training in China (self operating program)
After training in Japan, the two best students from among the past trainees will be selected and receive training to obtain a master's degree program in the 3-year M.A. course for working people at Peking University's School of International Studies with the cooperation of the China Institute for International Strategic Studies and Peking University. They can also receive funds for tuition fees and collecting materials. The program will also involve the follow up of the past trainees.
