Strengthening the Macroeconomic Forecasting Capability in Azerbaijan

9,600,000 yen (Grant Project)
Center for Economic and Business Research and Education, Khazar UniversityiCEBRE, Azerbaijanj

Azerbaijan has been an independent state for 15 years, but governmental macroeconomic analysis does not necessary reflect the actual state of the domestic economy because of poor analytical methods and monitoring. Non-governmental organizations have a very important role to play in conducting an objective analysis of the domestic economy, but they need to foster experts in macroeconomic analysis. The project aims to strengthen capacity building in macroeconomic analysis in Azerbaijan by helping CEBRE collect basic macroeconomic data and develop a proper macroeconomic forecasting model for the Azerbaijan economy based on experience in East Asia.

Activities of the year will be as follows.
  1. Research (April, 2006 to February, 2007 in Baku)
Researchers from CEBRE and other non-governmental institutes will conduct home economic and industry analyses, and conduct research to improve economic forecasting models. Results of the research will be reported at a meeting and released in expert papers such as Experts.

  2. Site visits (One week in August, 2006 in Kuala Lumpur)
Three core researchers will visit Malaysia to study economic forecasting models and the roles of non-governmental organizations in policy planning processes.

  3. Workshop and reporting meeting (November, 2006 and February, 2007 in Baku)
    (1) Workshop
Fifteen researchers will be selected from among the project participants to compile and analyze the data under the direction of Malaysian experts at the workshop.
    (2) Reporting meeting (About 25 participants)
Results of the research will be reported at a meeting with invited representatives of the Azerbaijan government and international organizations.

(Second year of a 3-year project)
