Strengthening Charkha's Feature Service in India
6,500,000 yen (Grant program)
Charkha Development Communication Network (CDCN, India)
The information divide between cities and local areas is very serious in India, and it is quite difficult in local areas to receive necessary information to improve everyday life through the internet, and to transfer local news and information to policy planners and intellectuals in large cities. To improve the current situation, the project aims to strengthen local news dissemination systems (CDCN acquires certain space in newspapers in large cities for the dissemination of local news and information reported by local reporters) and develop effective ways to acquire necessary news and information through the mass media. The project also aims to gain synergic effects with SPF supported projects including People Exchange Program: Strengthening Partnerships in the Pan-Asia Region and Supporting Journalism in Asia/Phase II.
Activities of the year will be as follows.
- Strengthening of local news dissemination systems (through year)
CDCN will plan the following activities in the targeted states (Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, UttranchalABihar, and Uttara Pradesh).
(1) Regular meetings
CDCN will organize regular meetings with major newspaper reporters.
(2) Capacity building meetings
Capacity building meetings will be held to strengthen reporting capability. In Uttara Pradesh, news reporting in Urdu will be carried out.
(3) Reporting meeting (February, 2007)
A reporting meeting will be held to share experiences and tasks among local newspaper reporters and major newspaper reporters in large cities.
- Alternative media (local radio stations etc) (through year)
News reporting through local radio stations will be tried in Uttranchal. Other reporting tools will be considered in Uttara Pradesh. CDCN will analyze contents and tools, and audience response to reporting.
- Trial management of local information centers (through year)
Local newspaper reporters and researchers will establish local information centers where they can acquire news and information from large cities, and analyze the management of the local information centers.
