Promoting Development of the Laotian NPO Sector

7,200,000 yen (Self-operated/Grant project)
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Health Education Volunteers (HEV, Vietnam)

Because of the influence of participation in ASEAN, it has been acknowledged in Laos that non-profit organizations have very important roles to play in social development, and the Laotian NPO sector has reached important turning points. However, the base of the Laotian NPO sector is still fragile, and they do not receive enough support from other sectors, including the government. Under the current situation, the project aims to promote the development of NPO sectors in Laos by helping NPO sectors and the Laotian government including the communist party understand the importance of NPO activities, and by introducing opportunities for collaboration between NPO and other sectors, including the government and Communist party. The project will use information and experience gained in Vietnam and China, which have similar backgrounds.

Activities of the first year will be as follows.
  1. First Steering Committee (Self-operated project. May, 2006)
A steering committee will be formed with 8 members of relevant Laotian and Vietnamese organizations. They will discuss the direction, strategies, and detailed activities of the project.
