Confidence Building in security among Southeast Asian Countries and Japan

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies: Nanyang Technological University (IDSS, Singapore)
Myanmar military officers belong to the political elite, but lack basic knowledge of international relationships and multilateral security systems because of their long term closed systems that are causing serious problems in international society. To improve the situation, the project aims to provide middle rank military and government officers with training in security and confidence building by Japanese experts and experts from IDSS. The self-operated project will plan Japan visits for Myanmar military officers to promote exchange between Japanese and Myanmar security people, thus contributing to the promotion of peace in Asia.
The first yearfs activities will be as follows.
- Dispatch of Japanese experts (Self-operated project, 2 days in July, 2006)
Japanese security experts will be dispatched to a Yangon training workshop.
- Yangon training workshop (Grant project for IDSS)
Workshops will be held discussing 5 subjects for 2 days in July, 2006, and 50 Myanmar military officers will participate.
- Site visits in Tokyo (Self-operated project. One week in November, 2006)
Ten delegates will be selected from among the workshop participants and sent to Tokyo for site visits. The delegates will visit the National Institute for Defense Studies and National Security Research Center to take classes and exchange opinions.
- Research on security study of Myanmar (Self-operated project)
SPF will monitor the project and conduct research on the security issues of Myanmar.
