People Exchange Program: Strengthening Partnerships in the Pan-Asia Region

The Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF)


The Sasakawa Pan Asia Fund (SPAF) has been conducting people exchange programs since the foundation of the Sasakawa Southeast Asia Cooperation Fund, the predecessor of SPAF. The project is the third phase of the original people exchange program aiming to strengthen ties between Japan and new target countries, including Northwestern India and Northeast Asian countries, in addition to maintaining the Southeast Asian human network already built by SPAF. The project also aims to develop a new human network for future projects.

This year's plans are as follows.
  1. ASEAN + 3 Leaders Exchange program
    (1) Invitation of ASEAN leaders (2 persons, May, 2006)
    (2) Dispatch of Japanese young leaders to Southeast Asia (2 persons, November,2006)
    (3) Exchange of ASEAN young leaders (January, 2007)
    Young leaders from ASEAN + 3 countries will be invited to Japan to exchange opinions with Japanese Diet members and intellectuals. Discussion themes include Aftermath of the East Asian Summit and political and economical issues related to the consolidation of regional cooperation. Dr. Mya Than of Chulalongkorn University will offer advice for the selection of ASEAN leaders and discussion themes, and Mr. Jun Tsubouchi, Associate Professor, University of Yamanashi, will advise on political and economic situations of ASEAN + 3.

  2. Invitation of young leaders from new target countries
    (1) Invitation of 3 young leaders from South Asian countries including Pakistan (7 days in August, 2006)
    (2) Invitation of 3 young leaders from the Middle East including the United Arab Emirates (7 days in December, 2006)
