Research on Roles of Program Officer in Grantmaking System

The following activities are scheduled for the final year of the project:
  1. Workshops (May, June, July, Sep. Oct. 2005 in Tokyo):
    Workshops will be held to share information obtained from conducting research overseas in the first two years of the program as well as discuss the content of papers to be produced by the participants. Lecturers will also be invited in order to facilitate the exchange of opinions with people on the receiving end of the funding (universities researchers).

  2. Overseas Research: (May 2005 in the US, 2 researchers)
    Researchers will study various issues related to the job of program officers working in private foundations in the US, such as employment status (full or part time), authority to make decisions, function as a coordinator/producer, career path/training etc. They will also make preparations for organizing an open symposium.

  3. Open Symposium: (November 11, 2005 in Tokyo):
    An open symposium will be held to share case studies of program officers working in the public/private sector overseas inviting about 100 people comprising central and local government employees, researchers, private foundation employees, NPO workers involved in program development, with the aim of furthering peoplefs understanding of the role of program officers in the grantmaking system.

  4. Publication of a collection of papers: The content of the symposium will be made into a book and published commercially.


  5. Conference Presentation: March 2006
