Island Forum in Japan/Phase II
8,000,000 yen [Self-Operated Project]
The Sasakawa Peace Foundation
This year we will provide a forum for participants of the Coconut College of the Pacific project to discuss the future of the program. In addition to past program participants, other possible contributors to the program, such as people from the University of the Ryukyus, will join discussions about future plans for the program. The program will also continue to disseminate information via the web.
- Coconut College of the Pacific: Open courses (based on the courses that had been offered in Yaeyama, Okinawa until last year) will be held as a side event of a conference jointly organized by the University of the Ryukyus (Center for Asia-Pacifc Island Studies) and the International Small Island Studies Association.
Theme: Tourism training through distance education
Venue: Miyako Island
Date: September 2005 (for three days)
Participants: Small island researchers from around the world, people working for education in Micronesia, residents of Okinawa (Miyako, Yaeyama islands).
- Tourism training: The Papua New Guinea tourism training courses that the program has been conducting since 2003 will be administered at the newly established Department of Tourism Science at the University of the Ryukyus. Proposals for administering tourism training courses for the Pacific Island nations in Japan will also be drawn up.
- Website operation: In addition to updating the popular Coconut College website, the program will also utilize the web to disseminate and collect information for the above two projects.
- Discussions will be held to decide how to proceed with the second phase of the Coconut College program.
