Research on Roles of Program Officer in Grantmaking System

This year the project will examine the various aspects of grant-making (systems, organizations and roles of individuals) by organizing workshops, conducting research, and compiling papers.
- Workshops (July 2004, October to December 2004)
Researchers in the fields of science policy, philanthropy studies, and higher education, and ten members of private grantmaking foundations will select specific cases to study and create an analysis framework based on the information gathered during the previous year's workshop. The will also compile a questionnaire on the role of program officers, referring to translated texts for information where necessary. A workshop will be held once the field research has been completed.
- Field Research (July to September 2004)
The project will carry our research into program officers in the US and UK working in the fields of science policy, scientific technology, culture/arts and civil society. The studies will target organizations such as the National Science Foundation, Public Health Foundation, major private and community foundations, UK research councils, community funds, local compact (collaboration with NPOs) within regional governments.
- Papers (October 2004 to February 2005)
Papers will be drafted on each of the case studies.
