A Vision for Enhancing Peace and Human Environment in the Middle East

12,000,000 yen [Grant Project]
Royal Scientific Society(Jordan)

Developments since 9-11, such as incidents of international terrorism and the quagmire in Iraq, has increased criticism of pro-Israeli US Middle Eastern Policy among Arabs. The region is experiencing a vicious cycle of violence, as evidenced by Israel's hard-line policy toward Palestine and escalation of suicide terrorist attacks by Palestine militants. This project aims to continue providing a channel for unofficial dialogue between intellectuals of the countries concerned. Specific activities planned for this year are as follows:

  1. Preparatory Workshop (October 2004 in Amman)
Both Israel and Palestine have requested for the Middle East Peace Roadmap proposed by the US to be reviewed and revised. Due to the fact that the US-proposed roadmap does not define the borders for a Palestinian State or touch on the Jerusalem issues, there has much debate over the terms for peace between the two sides. A diverse group of professionals from the region will discuss how the countries concerned can exchange views at a roundtable meeting as well as decide on an agenda for the meeting.

  2. Roundtable Meeting (March 2005 in Amman)
A round table meeting consisting primarily of presentation by professionals from the Middle East will be held to discuss political confusion and economic stagnation in the region.
