The Market and Publicity in Biomedicine: Building a Database for Social Scientific Researches
11,000,000 yen [Grant Project]
Sophia University(Japan)
This year the project will work toward the creation of a model database on the market/publicity in biomedicine as well as organize an international workshop.
- Creating a database (year-round)
- Collection and digitalization of research/empirical data:
A monthly meeting will be held to select the type of data to be collected and digitalized in accordance with the predetermined themes and guidelines. Data to be digitalized will range from books and essays on medical/biological research, scientific theory on "marketization" and "publicness" of healthcare, science history, sociology, anthropology, economics, as well as articles in newspapers and magazines that include the opinions of scientists, policymakers, and advisory committee.
- Videotaping interviews:
The project will interview medical scientists familiar with the latest developments in biomedicine. The interviews will be used to create video-texts on development and application of science/technology.
- International Workshop "Science and the Market: The Social Role of Universities" (July 2004 at Sophia University)
A workshop will be held on the above topic with the cooperation of researchers from America and Canada. Participants will discuss the development of the model database, as well as how to disseminate information that integrates experimental and normative research on science and bioethics.
(First year of a 3-year project)
