Developing Methods of Promoting Civic Participation in Science and Technology

The following activities will be conducted in FY2004 based on the results of the focus group interviews on research, organ transplants, and reproductive medicine that were conducted last year.

  1. Workshops inviting specialists in the field (May 2004)
    Participants will decide on a theme for the new citizen participatory method to be developed this year.

  2. Research on citizen participatory methods (April to July 2004)
    1) Continuation of last year's research
    2) Researchers will be sent to Europe and the US in June to study participatory methods used in other countries.

  3. Development of a new civil participatory method (July to November 2004)
    The project will develop a new citizen participatory method based on the results of the research conducted in Japan and abroad.

  4. Experimental implementation of the new citizen participatory method (December 2004 to February 2005)
    The new citizen participatory method will be implemented on an experimental basis in line with the theme decided at the workshop in May.

    1) A call for applications will be made and participants will be selected taking into account the attributes of the population.
    2) Specialists will be selected by making use of the foundation's networks and by announcing a call for applications.
    3) The new method will be tried out on four occasions, one of which will be a symposium.

    The number of workshop participants will be increased from eight to seventeen to prepare for the implementation of the abovementioned activities.
