Japan-China Young Historians Conference

This project supports research/opinion formation and information dissemination activities of young Japanese and Chinese researchers that can examine modern history from new perspectives. The project will create a network of young Japanese and Chinese researchers as well as enhance their influence on public opinion and policy with the aim of breaking through the wall that currently exists in both Japan and China in regards to historical issues between the two countries.

  1. Periodic workshops for presenting research (about five times/year):
    Workshops attended by about ten young researchers from Japan and China will be held on a regular basis.

  2. Roundtable Discussions:
    Roundtable discussions will be held inviting as guests historical researchers that have published research on relevant topics.

  3. Compilation of a reference book:
    A reference book on the main issue points in modern Japanese-Chinese History will be compiled.

    • Workshop participants will begin writing papers around April 2004.
    • The first editing meeting will be held in July 2004.
    • Two editing meetings will be held in fall 2004.
    • The manuscript will be completed in February 2005

  4. Commissioned research:
    Chinese researchers will be commissioned to carry out surveys on Chinese research on selected topics.

  5. Strengthening ties with the media:
    The project will continue to place an emphasis on strengthening ties with the media and improving the capacity to disseminate information.

  6. Exchange between young Japanese and Chinese historians:
    Young Chinese researchers will be invited to Japan to engage in research, and Japanese researchers will be sent to China to do the same, with the aim of strengthening interpersonal ties between Japanese and Chinese researchers.
