Basic Research on Building a Relationship of Mutual Trust between Japan and China

The China Association for International Friendly Contact will organize a project team to conduct a survey on public opinion of Japanese and Chinese people regarding each other's countries given recent developments in Japan-China relations. A workshop will be held to announce the results of the survey, and draw up proposals for promoting the recovery of trust between the two countries, which will be submitted to governmental decision-making bodies.

  1. Participants:
    A project team will be established comprising members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Center for Peace and Development Studies, journalists, academics, and practitioners to conduct the abovementioned research. Five researchers on the project team will visit China for one week in December 2004 to conduct surveys/engage in exchange activities.

  2. Media survey:
    The team will study and analyze reporting of by mainstream Japanese and Chinese media of major incidents in Japan-China relation since 1990.

  3. Questionnaire:
    The team will conduct a questionnaire survey on public opinion in China and Japan about each other.

  4. Research of literature:
    Members will study literature on how other countries resolved bilateral disputes/strengthened relations and draw lessons from these examples that can be applied to China-Japan relations.

  5. Statistical/data analysis:
    A group of experts will conduct a quantitative analysis of collected data and create a diagram displaying the results.

  6. Workshop:
    A workshop will be held in Beijing to analyse and discuss the results of the surveys conducted in China and Japan.

  7. Compilation/submission of a report: A survey report will be compiled by the end of February and submitted to Chinese policymaking bodies and others.
