Sasakawa Scholarship System for Chinese Students Studying Japanese/Phase II

  1. Outline of activities:
    A scholarship selection committee comprising five people from each university will be established in April to manage the scholarship scheme. Scholarships will be provided from October 2004.

  2. Scholarship amount:
    2000 Yuan (approximately 30,000 yen) a year per student.

  3. Number of scholarships:
    105 students studying Japanese in one of thirteen Chinese universities including Beijing Foreign Studies University and Guizhou University.

  4. Conditions:
    Students must:
    1) Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (MA or PhD) and majoring in Japanese.
    2) Excel academically (including a second foreign language) and have clear academic objectives.
    3) Be in compliance with all laws/regulations, show outstanding moral integrity, and be in good health.
    4) Submit an outstanding essay (approx. 1200 characters)

  5. Features of the scholarship:
    1) Students who are already receiving other scholarships are eligible.
    2) One year scholarship

  6. Monitoring/review by the secretariat:
    The secretariat will conduct a comprehensive review of the scholarship scheme in this final year of the program

  7. The project will create a website and a follow up survey will be conducted with the objective of establishing a Japanese studies network.
