Towards an Alternative Transitional Development Paradigm
12,900,000 yen[Grant Project]
Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University(Thailand)
This project will formulate a framework for analyzing the target countries, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and China, based on the findings of the project "Toward an Alternative Development Paradigm" conducted from 1997 to 1999. In the first year, the project organized a working group comprising three professionals, such as social scientists, political scientists, and economists, in each of the countries, and conducted analyses of economic development and the industrialization process. The following activities will be conducted in 2004 based on the results of these analyses.
Three seminars were originally scheduled for 2004, but only one will be held due to the delay in research resulting from the outbreak of the SARS epidemic.
- Compilation of country reports (April to August 2004):
Each working group will compile a country report based on the results of research conducted last year by the end of August 2004. The country reports will all be on the common theme of "electronics industry" with a focus on industries that the country has a relatively high comparative advantage in. The analyses will focus on the changes in systems related to the interaction between the external factor (globalization of the economy) and internal factor (the economic development mechanism) from the perspectives of economic growth and development, industrial policy and the role of government, and adoption of foreign technologies and technological advancements.
- International Conference (Sep. 2004 in Bangkok):
An international conference will be held in mid-September in Bangkok for the purpose of sharing the abovementioned analyses/reports. The seminar will invite at total of 25 people comprising researchers, policymakers, from each of the target countries, and representatives of international donor agencies.
- Drafting/revision of country reports/publication (Oct. 2004 to March 2005):
The country reports will be revised following discussions at the international conference, and published by the end of March 2005.
(Final year of a 2-year project)
